Weekend Getaway at Nakshatra Mana, Kochi, Kerala

Quick weekend getaways can just be the dose you need to break out from the weariness some weeks might subject you to. And the blissful retreat at Nakshatra Mana, was that dose I gratefully took, on one such weekend. Nestled just a 40-45-minute drive away (from Ernakulam), in the heart of Kochi, Kerala, this charming haven was our destination for a perfect weekend escape with friends.

Nakshatra Mana, is a 4-bedroom impressive and beautiful, private home to a couple from Bengaluru, who chose to create this tastefully done space as their holiday home. I learnt, that Nakshatra Mana was let out to guests, only 2-3 times in a month. You may watch and hear the couple Sneha Iype and Prakash Varma’s story of the making of Nakshatra Mana here. Video

The pebbled courtyard lead me to this unassuming villa. I couldn’t anticipate what awaited me within this 2-acre property. However, having heard good reviews from friends who had visited this property earlier, I was curious in an excited way.

As I stepped inside, the first thing my eyes were drawn to was an open-to-sky central courtyard, which was green and decorated with some eclectic knick-knacks. This courtyard seamlessly flows into a living area with plush-sink-into couches, leading to a cosy seating area and a charming veranda. Beyond that lies a peaceful pond, extending into a well-maintained garden that finally ends into an enthusiastically flowing river. So, as you stand near the courtyard you will witness layers and layers of beauty seamlessly flowing one after another, creating a picturesque and serene setting.

For a sultry and humid evening, typical of tropical locations, sliding glass doors on either side of the living area provides access to air conditioning. We spent time here late into the night engaging in conversations, unaffected by the humidity.

Surrounding the courtyard, are the 4 bedrooms one of which is in the attic. All the bedrooms are tastefully done holding some surprise element or the other. While the attic doesn’t have its own powder room, it is a charming space that our kids quickly claimed as their own. The open kitchen, dining area, and numerous cosy spots added to the homely vibe of Nakshatra Mana. The room I stayed in, had a back door that lead to the barbeque and swimming pool area. The barbecue area comes with colourful cushioned seating and cool sand underfoot. The dim lights provided a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.

On booking, a WhatsApp group was formed by the property managers to start a conversation and to get to know us better. We discussed the menu for the time of our stay and they openly accepted our suggestions. Seafood and vegetables took the spotlight on the dining table. From a barbecue night to traditional Kerala dishes for lunch, each meal was simple, yet delicious. The hospitality at Nakshatra Mana was exceptional, with the team’s warmth, courtesy, and helpfulness adding to our overall experience.

The pool water is refreshingly clean, thanks to a natural filtration process that avoids the use of chlorine. This feature didn’t come as a surprise to me, as I had seen it in their video prior to my visit. However, what pleasantly surprised me was the provision of swimming goggles neatly arranged by the pool for guests who may have forgotten theirs. These thoughtful touches demonstrate the care and effort put into making guests’ stays as stress-free as possible, extending beyond the pool area. From a selection of books in their living room library to board games, and throw cushions in the veranda that can be propped against pillows while reading or simply enjoying the breath-taking verdant views, every detail is designed to enhance the overall experience for guests.

The Veranda was my favourite spot and I ended up spending most of my time here, meditating, reading, enjoying conversation with friends over some tasty hot chai accompanied with pazhampori and parippuvada. The charm of the monsoons heightened my experience as I watched the raindrops create delicate ripples on the pond’s surface.

It was after a long time, that I was in an exquisite space that encouraged me to be still and live in the moment. Everything about this place is nothing short of charming. The décor, the architecture, and the minute detailing that has gone into this space create a cosy and inviting atmosphere that truly makes you feel at home and connected to the beauty of nature.
