A houseboat trip in Alleppey (Alappuzha)

I have been to Alleppey on the houseboat so many times; yet I never get enough of it. Where else will you get the calm and the beauty that Alleppey has to offer as you lazily cruise along the exquisite backwaters?

You defy time as you are able to catch up on lots with your dear ones all along as you enjoy the scenic beauty of the palm fringed backwaters, life of the locals, activities of that of the fisherman, the toddy tappers, the gliding Cormorants, the water hyacinths and so much more.

My last weekend was spent on the houseboat along with family. We talked, we played, we read, we drank, we ate and we slept….doesn’t it seem like an ideal day? For me it was heaven…. Here are few of the pics taken during the trip…

While on a houseboat at Alleppey (Alapuzha in Malayalam) ask you houseboat guy to stop over at a local toddy shop. Toddy is local liquor made from coconut. You must also buy snacks from this shop like kappa (tapioca) with fish curry, mussels & lobsters cooked in Kerala style. For seafood lovers, during the course of the cruise you can buy pearl fish / lobsters / prawn… etc fresh from local fisherman whom you can interact with during your cruise as they come sailing towards you with their catches of the day! Ask the chef on board to cook the fish for you. Mostly they don’t charge you for cooking extra!

Kerala has been promoting Monsoon tourism quite a bit now. For all those who haven’t yet experience life from a houseboat, I strongly recommend you do. And the best time to be on the houseboat is during rains. You can’t imagine the breathtaking beauty with water all around and sounds of the beating of raindrops on the houseboat. Simply stunning!

The rates differ from season to season. If you plan to stay overnight the package includes welcome drink, fruit basket, elaborate lunch and dinner, evening tea with snacks, drinking water and breakfast on the subsequent day before you check out. A day on a houseboat is usually 23 hours for they need an hour to get ready the houseboat for their next guest. You can also opt for a day cruise which includes everything except breakfast and dinner.

You have to go there to experience and know why people talk so high about it! I think the pictures above would have given you a fair idea.Yeh? So….

Go Alleppey! 🙂
