A Ski Holiday in Mayrhofen

Ski holidays are a popular way for Europeans to relax and enjoy some time in the great outdoors. Central Europe is clustered with ski resorts, with France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria being the most popular destinations. One of the best places to visit is Mayrhofen – a resort that has built a reputation as fun and friendly place that is great for skiing.

Mayrhofen is located midway between Salzburg and Vienna – this makes it easy to access and great for those embarking on larger tours of Austria and Central Europe. The closest road access is the A12 highway and there are also rail links to Salzburg and Vienna where you are likely to arrive if you are travelling by air.

The first thing that strikes people about Mayrhofen is the pedestrianized village centre – if you come during ski season there is almost a carnival atmosphere as people traipse around with skis and snowboards as they get their après ski drinks. The buildings are done in a traditional Austrian style, and there is even a local ice rink where you can have some fun. Generally, it is a peaceful and fun place.

The skiing is also fantastic – and that is the point after all – there are plenty of nursery slopes as well as red and blue runs (which are ideal for intermediates). There is also plenty for advanced skiers including the Hari Kiri, the steepest prepared slope in Austria which has a 78% gradient. Off piste skiing also abounds.

For snowboarders, there is also a great park which is sponsored by Vans and features a half pipe and some great jumps.

Ski holidays in Austria are always a lot of fun, and Mayrhofen is probably the best resort of the lot. It might not be as famous as Kitzbühel (which is another reason for all skiers to visit now!)  yet it is truly a pleasant place to spend a week during the winter.
